As many of you already know we have gone hog wild for facebook and in what it offers. We try as hard as possible to keep you updated as often as we can as well as offering you unique insight into the In Focus way of thinking ... and my goodness how you’ve responded. Our ‘like’ numbers have risen dramatically since we began this journey and have you to thank for it. We realize that many of you possibly didn’t have facebook accounts and are very private about who you let into and onto your world of facebook. We thank you for your trust, faith and courage.

POSTING ON FACEBOOK
As with anything ... interaction is key. Please if you would ever like to share a special photo, image or idea, feel free to post it on our wall. There are only a few occasions where we may remove it (vulgarity, inappropriateness, advertising, spam, competing businesses, etc ...) If you’ve got an image, idea, insight, trick and you want to share ... we really can’t wait to see it.

We’re doing our best to streamline your IFLC experience and want to keep all your important resources within quick striking distance. You’ll see that we’ve changed our facebook tabs bar a bit.

First you’ll notice a new ‘schedule’ tab. This tab gives you instant access to our most recent schedule. Updates (such as this one) will be made available there as well. What a Difference a Few Minutes Make

So it's been a couple weeks since America celebrated its 234th birthday, and I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend and got lots of great fireworks shots. I just wanted to share three photos I took on July 4th while waiting for the fireworks to start. All three photos were taken with the same settings but only about five minutes apart -- it's amazing to see how the light changed within those five minutes even though it wasn't that noticeable with my own eyes.

Sometimes.

The problem I have with shooting birds is that I already know what a bird it supposed to look like. The mark of lightness in feathering…and down. Staunch (and slight) leggings with defined gnarl and nail. These are details that could be sought after, with great care, and displayed for artistic recording’s sake. Maybe if I’m diligent enough, I could capture a fish in the mouth, or in talons. But like I said, I already know what to expect from this.

Everyone else is doing it…why shouldn’t I? I’m quite sure that there are lots of good reasons to create this way. Why else would everyone be doing it?

For me, the answer does not begin with what everyone else does, or expects. This conundrum is only answered from within.

To work within an impressionistic approach means the set up and execution is every bit as tedious and attentive-intensive as any other technique, but with less results.

The decision to move a camera (or to multiply exposures) during the capture may seem ludicrous to some. It is a way for others, an avenue to create an essence of the vision. That vision is the culmination of what is set before the artist, and the artist’s interpretation and re-creation of the affect of the visual experience. Like other artists, there is color and tones, lines, shapes and of course lighting to consider.

What and how these elements affect the artist at that very moment is the message we try to convey.

A bird, in its own right, is a beautiful complex creature, whose image alone may stand as a work. But it is the impressionist’s vision of how that beauty interacts with all the available surroundings that drives the message.

So decisions are made…background….foreground…”subject” and how much detail is sought. Longer exposure? Multiple exposures? ISO grain? Kelvin? B&W?

It is not until then that the work starts. Sometimes the visionary’s message is accomplished, sometimes not. Sometimes, the bird flies off during that last part of the message building…and all is lost, not unlike traditional photography. Failure rates are increased, but the impressionist expects this and moves on to the next opportunity.

These rules and restraints apply to all impressions, landscape, portrait…and just try to work impressions with white water elements messing up the exposure values. Failures to many. Hurdles for the impressionist.

At some point, there are “successes”, and the impressionist tears up a little from the sweat and failures it took to deliver this message of love of essence.

This is not to say that traditional photography is easy. Not at all. All of the same design elements go into composition and execution, and of course, a bird may fly right out of a shot no matter what approach.

But then, that brings me back to my original question. Why don’t I work the traditional way? Actually, if the work demands it, I will shoot it, but more than likely, I (and others like me) prefer to document the less tangible essence of a moment., than the minute details that make up a vision.

I almost forgot...besides learning about our camera's internal colored filter effects in the black & white photography workshop today, we also learned about playing with colored tones within the monochrome setting. This is an example of capturing a landscape shot in monochrome using the 9 colored tones available in the Nikon D90: sepia, cyanotype, red, yellow, green, blue-green, blue, purple-blue and red-purple

Fun Learning About Internal Filters for Shooting in Black & White

Here's a sample from today's in-class assignment of capturing something in color and then capturing it again in monochrome and playing with the different internal colored filters. It's amazing to see how parts of the picture become lighter or darker, depending on their original color and the color of the internal filter you use.

Notice how the tones in the table & chairs, as well as the door, change - especially the writing on the door. Sometimes it appears like a dark door with light writing and with a switch of the filter, it appears like a light door with dark writing. It was a fun workshop that I highly recommend - I can't wait to play more in black & white now that I know the options I have to work with and have learned how to visualize in a new way! Image taken yesterday in Balboa Park. I love the power of the off-camera flash when creating art. It's a vital tool and one every In Focus artist should master.

For many people, the pictures they take don't quite live up the their own recollection of events or the feelings that surrounding them. They believe it to be an equipment issue. They are wrong. The answer they are seeking is a simple one — you can't shoot, what you can't see. We (as a species) can only concentrate on one thing at time, even though our interpretation of what's in front of us (how we feel about it) is based on many things: such as our memories, current sensory input and expectations. When we are inspired, the emotions felt stem from the many — yet we as traditional photographers can only focus on the one. If you want to grow as an artist, if you want better images — then you have to begin thinking about more than just subjects. You have to start expressing yourself, you have to share with the rest of the world how you feel about things. You have to focus on your own individuality, instead of just another subject. The truth for an In Focus artist is pretty simple: It's not about just shooting pretty pictures, it's about showing the world who you are as an artist. Make that your goal, make that a priority and then just see how much 'better' your images get!

It's starts, as everything does, with inspiration (the real reason we pick up our camera). Something in front of you sparked a feeling, a desire. This 'thing' doesn't have to be tangible, mind you — you don't even have to touch it or even see it, yet it's there nonetheless. In Focus photographers attempt to zero-in on this feeling (the actual reason for shooting). They try to create an image that reflects this, foregoing what others 'see' and centering their attention on themselves and the emotions they are trying to express —to share. This is what makes us (as photographers) quite unique.

For most people though, the camera simply records things — a tool to record the objects in front of them. Sure they may be inspired as well, sure there are feelings present but instead of focusing on them they point their camera towards the 'things' that triggered it. They take a picture of their dog, their cat, their child, a new car, a new house, grandparents visiting, an animal in the backyard, a bird in the tree, their niece's birthday party and so on — without ever searching for meaning or expression an emotion. They see and shoot subjects, nothing more.

It's these same people that look for answers and search out ways of making their photos better. They see a problem, they know something is lacking in their photography — they just can't figure out what 'it' is. They quickly jump on the 'I-gotta-get-some-better-gear' bandwagon, thinking that the answer lies in the lens, camera or flash they use. They doctor-up, manipulate and change the images in computer programs trying, more than anything, to hide the fact that they really don't know what they are doing. Sure their images are 'pretty' but they still lack 'punch' and meaning. Something is missing.

We as In Focus photographers know the answer is heart. It's meaning. But this is information we've garnered through countless hours of training, through mistakes we allowed ourselves to make and through perseverance. Not everyone has this (or wants it).

Some seriously don't care. They are perfectly happy with simply recording life ... and that's fine. After all, artists will always need someone to sell their stuff to right? But there are plenty of people who are simply misguided. They believe the marketing lies and untruths. They really think more mega-pixels will make their bad photos better, not just bigger. The see the 'professionals' using certain camera's and lenses and buy those. They hear that this program is better than that program. They buy books, CD's, videos and even go to classes (hopefully good ones) all in hopes of getting better photos. Yet the answer, the real thing they are looking for, is right there in front of them. If you want a better photo ... then just have something better to say.

Next time you raise your camera, instead of just looking at a subject ... think about why you raised your camera in the first place. What is really there, what are you feeling? Then use what you've been taught. Create some mood, use that depth-of-field knowledge, change that white balance, contrast, saturation — think about what it is you want to say and just make it happen.

The best thing you can do as an artist-in-training is to realize that you are not just trying to shoot pretty pictures, you are trying to become an artist who can create anything he wants. Make that your goal and you will be quite shocked at far you will go.

BEE-careful of really bad photography advice!

Yesterday I had the privilege of shooting some of the hardest working models you'll ever encounter. And while they may move fast and remain intent throughout ... a caring and knowledgeable In Focus artist can create some rather magnificent images without ever bothering them.

I'm reminded at this time of year of some really horrible advice out there when it comes to shooting macro or close-up photography. Sadly, most photographers take this nonsense for gospel ... and it just has to stop.

I would like to start by saying that is down-right WRONG to kill any animal (no matter how small or insignificant you think it is) in order to simply take a photo of it. Not that long ago a student of ours shared a story of another photo excursion she attended. The 'instructor' informed her that the only true way of getting a great shot of an insect was to actually kill the animal and 'place' him on the flower. He was talking about bees and it was a close-up workshop held at flower fields in Carlsbad.

I HAVE NEVER heard of anything so downright wrong or cruel. If the 'instructor' knew anything at all about light, the insects in question or his own equipment then his blind ignorance and savage approach to life, beauty and the truth would not have been so obvious. Even with the most rudimentary knowledge of photography this should NEVER have been a thought.

Please be careful when you choose which courses in photography you take ... and if something doesn't sound right, then, please take it with a grain of salt.

Sadly, there is no test taken, no examine given that certifies someone as a 'professional' photographer. Be careful of who you take your classes from and remember here at the IFLC we remain committed to not hurting anything when we shoot. (You would think this to be fairly obvious.)

I don't have any problem whatsoever achieving crisp focus and outstanding colors when I allow the animal to be himself. There is a way of capturing these images without EVER hurting the animals, trust me. That's what a flash and a tiny aperture are for. And besides isn't a photograph of them 'doing-their-thing' so much better? I really wish these people (the ignorant professionals) would simply find a different job or maybe actually learn a little about their chosen career. Until then ... they need to keep their mouths shut.

To top it off, Robin recently showed me a book on macro photography that advocates the use of a 'kill' jar as well. Unbelievable!

The key to great close-up images is simply controlling light gang — adding it when you need it and knowing why (and how) to control it. It has nothing to do with shooting in a studio, building one outside and( for goodness sakes) it does NOT take a tripod to do it. Close-up photography (more than anything else) requires you to move quickly — not be stuck in one position!

Plus, it's okay if the wind blows. Don't run when the breeze is present ... just learn to deal with it. You need to take charge of the situation my friends. You need to add light and you HAVE to do it with your flash off-camera! If you haven't bothered with a flash yet or have yet to learn why they are important, now may be the time.

Below are some images from a quick shoot at Balboa Park. My models were quite intent on their job ... as was I. It was me, one lens and one modified off-camera flash. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I did making them. And remember NO bee was hurt in the making of these images, no tripods were used and I never (not once) got stung!

April welcomes back our ever-popular core photography courses: In Focus I, Mastering the Mechanics and In Focus II, A Field Guide to Composition and Flash Photography, A Practical Guide to Adding Light. These courses are your best bet if you're aiming for basic or advanced photographic perfection or even pure artistic expression.

If you're brand new to your camera we suggest taking In Focus I. We'll walk you through the basics of manual control, covering everything from exposure control, white balance options, depth-of-field choices, lens differences, internal contrast and saturation settings and more. This is the perfect class in which to develope your base and get your feet wet with real In Focus photography.

In Focus II: A Field Guide to Composition will usher in a new group of In Focus artists to the world. During this amazing course (one of our most popular) students traverse the shores of human biases and psychological norms. When I started attending IFLC classes last spring I was often challenged by some of the practice assignments that required a model. I'm single with no children, so that meant my dog usually got volunteered to assist. He was always a trooper about it, although he was not a fan of the flash. Some of you may remember the pictures I posted of him when I was experimenting with the different colored film gels I learned about in the IFLC flash course. In recent months he started experiencing seizures so my IFLC classes were put on hold due to the vet bills and just wanting to spend quality time with him since I knew the clock was ticking on the time I had left with him.

After a horrific seizure last Friday in which he injured himself and showed little sign of fully recovering over the weekend, my vet and I decided it was time to let him get the eternal rest I'm sure his body wanted. Naturally it was a sad day, but I knew this was my last opportunity to capture moments with him - so I pulled out both my Nikon D90 and my Sony Cybershot point-n-shoot to capture some last shots.

I'm posting three shots. This first two shots are from his last day with me (both taken with the point-and-shoot). I wasn't worried about the background, composition, etc. as I normally would be - he was sick and I had to consider just getting the shot without making him uncomfortable. The first one shows him posing with a picture frame I made when I found this wonderful saying and wanted it in the house, "Dogs crawl into the secret places in your heart. And they never leave." (and the picture in the frame was shot with the DSLR).

The next shot is a happy moment I captured when my neighbor brought him his own individual miniature size cup of Hagen Daz ice cream to enjoy before the vet arrived at the house (check out that tongue action!!)

The last shot was taken last spring when I used him as a model for practicing the techniques learned in Rod's adult education class (taken with the DSLR). I captured him sitting in our backyard enjoying the weather and listening to the birds chirping.

And although he may not look it, he was about to turn 16 in June - so you can only imagine the years of photos I have of him - especially in the last year with all of the IFLC homework!!

Thank God for cameras and the ability to capture precious moments we can never get back!

A great weekend of classes!

This image was shot during our Sharpshooter outing Sunday afternoon. It illustrates the classic In Focus 'ripping' technique (one of many in-camera 'painting-with-lens' techniques). The class also covered basic 'punching' and in-the-field multiple exposure work.

What a fun and exciting weekend of classes for the IFLC. For all of those In Focus students who braved the weather and joined us in Balboa Park... thank you for your courage, tenacity and strength. Your desire to learn what it takes to be an artist with your camera really inspires me. I'm humbled to be your instructor.

This weekend saw literally a downpour of techniques and options. More than 50 In Focus students traversed the colors, contrasts and striking stories found in San Diego's most incredible park. A new group of artists tackled the basics as In Focus I: Mastering the Mechanics began its month long journey. We covered exposure options, aperture and shutter control, white balance choices, focus decisions and more. They pushed and pushed hard. The constant rain only added to our options as we focused on real message building and dynamic results.

In Focus II: A Field Guide to Composition students saw the world a bit differently as we literally walked through the basics of composition, human biases and sociological norms. Capping, anchoring, visual weight and graphic rhythm topped our list of things to do ... and boy did we do it!!! The theories were tough ... but we pushed through and by the end garnered a new found appreciation for the lines, shapes, patterns, colors and tones that surround us.

Our Black and White class was also on hand for Sunday's drizzle. The park took on a whole new flavor as we explored the power of changing colors to tones. We got a grip on our options at the beautiful Art Village, then tested that experience inside the botanical garden. What fun!

Our portrait class also saw their share of shooting this weekend as we kicked off one of our most popular courses with a deep look into the basics. We discovered the power of contrast and saturation, we explored some basic isolation techniques and learned a bit about environmental portraits. We ended our class at the amazing organ pavilion where we used the environment to our advantage. I can't wait for the next class.

But that wasn't the end to our weekend ... Our Sharpshooter's group got together in the later afternoon and shot our way through some fascinating In Focus painting techniques including: punching, ripping and a bit of multiple exposure work.

Next weekend we're off to other locations. In Focus students will be exploring more black and white options and portrait preferences at the rustic Old Poway Park, they'll be blocking, stacking and layering in Old Town and having fun with perspective, depth-of-field and focus in Carmel Del Mar.

It's going to be a great weekend and week. Please if you were in one of our classes this weekend make sure to keep checking your blog this week. We are exceedingly proud and excited to share with you (officially) news of a new In Focus book project. As many of you know we have been working for a year now with Amherst Media, the world's largest and most prolific publisher of photography books. Our first book Off-Camera Flash (due to hit book store shelves in just a few weeks) was a dream come true. Never have we worked so hard on one singular project. As many of you know it was a labor of love for our entire family. Some of you are also aware that we've penned two other books for Amherst Media: Just One Flash and Multiple Flash (both scheduled for a November release).

We'd like to now announce that a new contract has been signed for a brand new book for Amherst (on a subject that has never been written about before) Off-Camera Flash for the Close-Up and Macro Photographer. This book will combine two of our favorite genres and we are (again) so very excited. The entire family will be participating as well and our shooting schedule has actually already begun.

For the next few months we'll dive deep into everything macro and close-up — and we can't wait.

We also realize that none of this would have been possible without you ... our In Focus family. It was you who pushed us toward this realization, it was you who gave us the courage to spread the word of manual control and it was you who gave us the confidence to make it all happen.

From the bottom of hearts we thank each and every one of you ... and we promise to make this book live up to the traditions of the IFLC and to stay true to our core belief — the beauty comes from inside the photographer, not from his camera bag.

HELLO FRIENDS!!!

Robin and I had a GREAT time with our classes this weekend. As many of you know we've changed our classes quite a bit and have incorporated flash use in nearly every one. Here are a few from Sunday's three classes — Macro, In Focus III and Fun with the Flash.

This was great fun. We were in the 'Fun with the flash' course and I was teaching them to work from their background forward, paying particular attention the the quality and direction of the light they were adding. With the help of the 'big bounce' we were able to score some rather impressive images!!!

I don't think it gets much prettier than this. This was shot with a simple 18-55 kit lens. The flash was corded and slightly modified with the big bounce. Everything was in manual ... and there was a huge smile on my face. For those who like specifics: I was wearing brown socks, had a burrito for breakfast and left my hat at home. As far as camera settings ... come on guys! Don't you know me by now? Those numbers don't matter since they will change for every picture you envision. You can't use those for references ... it's pointless and will only make things harder. Just have some determination. Picture the image in your head, then do whatever it takes to make it happen. Visualization is key and determination is the door.

This was shot just a few feet from the above photo. The ominous background was created with the use of the 'proper' internal settings along with the 'correct' white balance, shutter speed and aperture settings.

This image was sooooo much fun. We were shooting late in the evening and I wanted to share my passion for flash photography with the class. I set the camera on a bean bag near the water, adjusted the settings according to my vision, asked Robin to model for me and began. The image took about 8 seconds to 'cook' and while it was exposing I ran around the scene 'feathering' the various tiers of graphic information with a flash. I 'splashed' Robin with light twice with the flash (once on each side of her face) as to give her PERFECT LIGHTING (never aiming it directly at her face). Then I quickly ran behind the fountain and 'hit' the water three times in the back with the flash... and then ran to the front and 'feathered' the front of the fountain two more times as well. Pretty cool result!!!

In the macro class I introduced the flash to a handful of eager artists. The above image is nothing compared to what some of the got!!!

I had the chance at the beginning of the flash class to instruct my students on the finer points of feathering a flash off camera — such as 'going with the grain' instead of against it. Robin was awesome and modeled for us.

Again friends remember, it's not about the gear you have ... rather the vision you begin with. Let the artist out and your images will always shine. That's a promise.

Quail Botanical Gardens

Went to the Quail Botanical Gardens today. What a great place to visit. I did a little macro work and a lot of walking. It was a nice day to spend with nature.

I really liked the lines using black and white with this.

It's nice to see some of the Urban Trees being reused in a natural setting. So much nicer. They have several different sculptures up there right now besides the Urban Trees. Go take a look.

Finally went outside with camera. These are from my front yard. The paper whites were planted last December. They have survived the heavy rains and are quite pretty still. My camera is my Oly E-3 and I used my old Minolta MD 50mm lens...I love that lens!

Community orchestra is a big part of my husband's life. When the conductor asked for someone to take photos during this week's concert I was volunteered. A Rossini "opera" for two cats and a piano concerto where the conductor and pianist fight throughout the piece were the subjects.

In focus training at work, I crawled around on the
floor, bouncing flash off the ceiling. Pianist almost stepped on me when she decided to leave (I didn't know that was in the plan)!

A big challenge was getting the lights blocked by the bodies. Subjects that don't hold still are a challenge.

All in all it was fun. Recommend anyone give it a try when you get the chance.

Impressionistic Photography

I came across the website and photography of Eva Polak this afternoon while surfing the Web during my lunch break at my desk. Her photographs represent exactly what Rod and Robin have been teaching us and are a sign that perhaps the world is finally starting to wake up and realize that photographs needn't always be perfectly exposed or tack sharp to be beautiful. Her photographs, like Rod and Robin's, are very inspirational and should make anybody that sees them want to go out and take some themselves.

Of her photography, Eva says

In the same way as the French impressionist painters I endeavour to convey a sense of time and motion with the ever changing properties of natural light.

My photographs are creative representations of the subject and they have been produced using traditional in-camera techniques.

From the moment you see her first photograph, it's evident that she employs many of the techniques taught by Rod in the Painting with a Lens course. Rod and Robin: the world is listening...

"We've just added a brand new class to our exciting February line-up. Scheduling conflicts prevented us from offering our basic flash course this time around but after so many requests (and pleas) we had to do something ... and we KNOW you will love what we came up with."

USING YOUR FLASH — A NEW WORKSHOP SERIES
(EIGHT STUDENTS ONLY!)

For the first time, the In Focus Learning Center is offering to everyone (no prerequisite required) a specialized in-the field flash training workshop series beginning Feb. 7. Unlike our in-depth basic flash course, we take everyone (from novice to pro) through the ins-and-outs of using their flash to get the best possible photo.

Join us as we explore the tips and tricks of adding light in three popular photographic settings: nature, night and portrait photography. We will introduce students to basic support, communication and modification tools and show them not only how, but when these tools can be used effectively.

There is no need to buy anything extra for this course, no need to worry about not having the right gear. We will use what you have and learn everything it offers! Think of it as four semi-private field trips designed to do nothing but get you great images using your own flash equipment.

We are limiting this class to 8 students … so sign up now to reserve your spot.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

SESSION 1 — BASICS OF ADDING LIGHT
We begin with the basics of flash control covering shutter sync speed, power output, and basic flash tools in communication, modification and support. We will also explore the reasons for employing the flash as well as when it’s appropriate to do so. From simple fill flash to more creative lighting choices, this first session will set the foundation for the student to grow.

SESSION 2 — THE FLASH AND NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY
From close-up shots to sweeping landscapes, adding light to your scene with a flash has its advantages. In this session, students will be guided in adding light to different tiers (front, back or middle) to bring out the best in their nature shots. We will demonstrate the best placement of your flash (or flashes) as well as if they should be modified and how.

SESSION 3 — THE FLASH AND NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
For many of us, shooting at night simply means either using a very slow shutter or overpowering the situation with an out-of-control flash. In this session, we will cover the basics of adding light at night to get the shot we want, as well as other special effects, strobe, ghosting and repeating flash techniques.

SESSION 4 — THE FLASH AND PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographing people in their best light is the key to this session as we use the flash to best enhance our portraits. Students will be guided through different flash angles and the effect each has on a person. We will also cover when to use modification tools, how to use fill flash and even how to use lighting to create mood.

An old school lesson on DOF and Hyperfocal Distance

I'm having a great time updating our Practical Approach Web site.
I can see I'll be adding to this for a quite a while — it's quite addicting. I'll keep you updated here as to when new entries are made as well as on Facebook.

Focusing for depth of field in the 'old-days' wasn't just an option, it was the way we guaranteed success. If you needed three feet of focus, then that's what you did — you looked at your depth-of-field scale on your lens, adjusted your aperture correctly and simply 'dialed-in' three feet of focus distance. To check your focus area you pressed the depth-of-field preview button, made any adjustments necessary, and that was that. If your subjects were spread out further, you simply dialed-in what you needed (picked a smaller hole). And if you wanted max focus range (from a few feet to infinity) you simply figured out the hyperfocal distance, adjusted you lenses' focus-ring and shot accordingly. There was no trick to it, no secret spells cast and we didn't even use image stabilization to make sure our pictures were 'crisp' — not breathing and holding the camera steady seemed to work amazingly well for us back then. I guess the air is different today.

We did what was needed, because we knew it was needed. Depth-of-field control was an obvious necessity. We saw more than just subjects. We cared about more than just one thing. Today though things are different, these techniques have been lost and the words themselves belittled. After 25 years of auto focus people actually think they are shooting a picture of just one thing (always). They've become oblivious to the fact that depth of field can be controlled. The words and phrases listed above (depth of field, dialed-in, depth of field preview, scale, hyperfocal distance and even focus-ring) just don't click. The truth has been lost — apathy and ignorance have run amuck.

Many new photographers today sadly lean on smile recognition software, sensor types and editing programs. They listen to 'professional' digital photographers drone on and on about what camera and which lens work best. They lament the loss of image quality ... when they have no idea what the word 'quality' truly means.

Image 'quality' comes from the content of your message, not how many pixels your image is made of or what sensor is creating them. Remember, garbage is still garbage no matter how much of it you have or how 'clean' you can make it.

To see what's been lost and possibly find a reason to learn these terms and techniques, let's look at a few simple 'old-fashioned' lenses and how those 'old school' photographers saw the world and used those options, terms and techniques to guarantee success.

Reading an old-school depth of field scale

Lets begin by looking at the outside of a lens. This is one of my all time favorite lenses that is always with me. It's gotten some use as you can see but I can't imagine ever being without it. It's my 'go to' lens. It's a classic Nikon 28mm and it's as close to my heart as any piece of plastic with glass in it has ever been.

Near the bottom of the lens you can see some familiar numbers. The f/stops on this lens range from f/2 to f/22, although every conceivable aperture can be dialed-in by simply moving the aperture ring slightly between each number. This was an awesome feature on all lenses 'back in the day.'

Immediately above the f/numbers you'll see the depth of field scale (the multi-colored lines), as shown in the above image.

These lines are color coded as you can see. The colors on the scale match the various colors in which the apertures are painted.

In the center of the scale you'll see your current focus point, as represented by the single dot in the above image. This is the spot where you are currently focusing. You'll notice that it rests directly below the focus distance scale. This particular lens is currently focused at nearly two feet away.

As shown in the above image, the top line of the scale is in feet and the bottom is in meters. Don't get these mixed up.

To use the depth of field scale simple look at both vertical colored lines that represent the aperture you are using. The distance between the colored lines is your current depth of field. If you were to use the lens above at its current focus position, then at f/16 you would be able to get everything from 1.5 feet to nearly 3 feet in clear (acceptable) focus. Everything else will be usually be unacceptably blurry.

At f/22 our depth of field opens up a bit, allowing for more things to appear in focus.

Of course the 'appear in focus' is the key phrase here. At any given time, no matter which aperture, focal length or subject distance you've chosen — only one thing will be razor sharp (whatever you actually focused on.) Depth of Field is based on acceptable blur levels and that really is a personal thing. What you see with these guides is based on a shared human bias of acceptability. Your own version of 'acceptable blur' may (and probably will) vary from this scale. But at least it's a place to start.

Many newer lenses do not offer this seemingly important feature.

This above Nikon 'kit' lens does not have any depth of field information at all. It even lacks a focus distance scale. (It's called a 'kit' lens because it is one of the more popular lenses found when purchasing a camera and lens together ... in a camera 'kit.') As shown in the below images many other lenses have this scale, though it may appear different and may not offer as much information as you'd like.

Hyperfocal distance

If you were to set your focus point to infinity and have your aperture set to a smaller size (f22) you can see from the below lenses' distance scale that there is a considerable amount of focus distance beyond infinity. This focus depth (depth of field) is being wasted.

This is a pretty natural thing to do (to waste focus distance.) Since people shoot in auto focus and since their camera has to focus on something, then they are ALWAYS wasting focus depth. An artist though understands how to harness this power and use what lens designers termed hyperfocal distance. Notice on the distance scale above how the focus distance (depth of field) goes from about 5 feet to infinity and then beyond.

But what if we moved the focus point, as in the above photo. What if we simply refocused the lens without looking through it. What if we just moved the infinity marking to the outer edges of our depth of field scale. Now you are shooting at your hyperfocal distance. Your focus point is somewhere near five feet (as you can see on the above lens), and your minimum focus depth is now at two feet (the distance between the two orange lines associated with the dialed-in f/22 aperture). Meaning that everything from two feet to infinity is now in focus and NOTHING is being wasted.

This seems like a brilliant thing to do, but think of the problems for the auto-focus shooter. Since his camera has to focus on something, he has a problem. What if there is nothing at the five foot range. His camera can not auto-focus on air. That's impossible. However if you're manually focusing this is no problem, just look at your depth of field scale and move the focus ring where it needs to be (in this case five feet).

You don't even have look through the lens. It's easy if you have the courage. The problem is, of course, once you look through your viewfinder at this focus setting EVERYTHING WILL APPEAR OUT OF FOCUS. This is not a problem, it's just a fact of life. If you remember, since your camera employs an automated aperture system, you are looking through your lens with its largest aperture (in this case f/2) instead of f/22 (that you have dialed-in). Again, not a problem for the In Focus artist, he simply ignores this illusion and if he needs to ensure the acceptability of his focus, then he employs the depth of field preview button, disengages the automated aperture system and sees the world as he will capture it — with everything from two feet to infinity being in sharp focus.

I do the website for the Tangles Hair Studio, Encinitas (http://www.tangleshairstudio.com). They have an adorable new stylist who offers a variety of services, some new to the salon. This talented young lady needs some photographs of her work so I can put them up on the website... and while I've taken a handful of In Focus courses, portraiture is just not my forte and I don't own any external flashes etc. as yet. If you think you could help us out, it's a neat opportunity to just practice your skills... not for big pay, but for big appreciation and some small compensation. Holly (you can read about her on the 'staff' page) will trade a haircut (she is quite good, she's done my hair and I loved the cut) and the salon owner, Angela, will trade some products for this help.

Our current need - Holly will be doing formal up do styles on a group of young ladies for their prom on 2/6... this is the date we'd like to find someone who could be there and take pix... bring your equipment and any external lighting sources you need. You should definitely plan on needing to be there multiple hours that day, I do not yet have the appointment times... coming soon!

There may well be follow on opportunities as she gets into make-up, vintage hair etc. if you find that you enjoy this type of practice. We will also give you credit on the site for your images, a bit of notoriety never hurts. ABOUT THE APERTURE

As the aperture is opened, more light enters the camera. The aperture is inside the lens and is made of movable metal leaves that make straight edges around the hole.

The aperture is a variable sized hole in your lens. The size of this hole directly influences how much of the scene in front of you will appear in focus. An artist-with-a-camera chooses his aperture size in the beginning of his image making process. This choice is not taken lightly. Aperture size will ultimately dictate or influence most every other decision that needs to be made — including that of required shutter speed, focal length, flash use, I.S.O choice and more.

This hole can be adjusted via controls either in-camera or on the lens itself (depending on the age of your lens). Each major step is numbered, with each number representing a specific aperture size. These numbers are called f-numbers. The (f) refers to the focal length from which the number is derived.

Every In Focus photographer to know the basic series of f-numbers. It's actually an easy thing. ... all you really have to do is remember two: 1 and 1.4. Simply double them alternately and you've got it. Yes, I know that 5.6 and 11 aren't quite right ... but it's close enough and easier to remember than the actual sizes. The other apertures available are fractions of the above.

Often these f-numbers are called f-stops. The word 'stops' hails from photo history. Long before the automatic aperture system was developed photographers had to insert various metal plates into their camera with very specific size holes. If the photographer used smaller holes then the light would be stopped more so than when he would use a plate with a larger hole. Hense the word 'stop' became synonymous with f-number.

Often you'll hear photographers use the words 'stopping up or down' when referring to adjustments made to the aperture. They may also use the word 'step' or the words 'shrink the hole' or 'widen the gap'. All refer to the same thing. For instance if you hear the phrase "I stopped down 5-stops." This simply means that the photographer made his f-number 5 sizes smaller.

Doubling or 'halving' the amount of light is an change of one stop.

An In Focus attitude

We are a different creature; we In focus photographers. We’re interested in more than just what it takes to make our pictures pretty — we try for meaning, for artistry, for expression.

From the moment we took full control of our camera, our vision and purpose changed. Our view of photography, our philosophy of creating a message (instead of just taking a picture) and then our persistence in sharing that truth (and the freedom it offered) made us different, it set us apart. It made us who we are.

Some of us were ostracized at first, our photos shunned, our intent belittled. But with time things change, attitudes adjust — art has a way of affecting everyone. Over the years our unique brand of creativity, of artistic focus and independent thought has grown. Hundreds upon hundreds of eager photographers have taken up the challenge of full manual control, have swam in the waters of creative freedom and have survived ... some have even succeeded. Mark Wade, besides being an avid In Focus artist and award-winning 'painter' of light, recently released his first book that combines his love of visual communication and his thought provoking prose. It has been an uphill battle though. For too long has the world been subjected to the nonsense of the non-caring ‘professional photographer’ touting the most silly and useless of ideas. This iron-fisted grip of ignorance and fear needs to open. Integrity has to find a way in and YOU are the key. Your determination will lead others and your images will be a beacon of hope. You will make the difference in photography. You will change it from the record collection back into a pool of ideas and thoughts.

Everyone (whether ‘in focus’ or not) knows that manual control is the key to unlocking creative options and artistic freedom ... they've just forgotten it. So we, armed with courage, commitment and knowledge have to remind them, teach them. Our voices should raise up: “Creativity is found in the soul of the artist, not in the bottom of his camera bag.”

Expressionism is slowly returning to photography and it’s because of people like you — people who aren’t afraid of the truth and a little hard work. Remember, an In Focus photographer challenges the norm, they set the pace. We create our messages quickly, carefully and with purpose. We know that success without failure is meaningless and that every great image comes with a price — that of experience and vision. Not everyone can do what you do. Be proud of who you are, what you know and what you’re willing to learn. You are different. You are unique ... you an In Focus artist. Share that with the world, not just your amazing images.

The world desperately needs real artists right now and I am humbled by your courage and commitment to your goal. Continue the push toward that sea of creative freedom my friends. We can change the way the world thinks ... and maybe even teach of few of them to swim along the way.

Macro Day!

Spent the day at the gardens working on all things macro. I used macro tubes for some, and just flipped my 50mm for others.

I used a flipped 50 for the first one. It's a piece of stained glass I found on a bench.

I also flipped my 50 for the next one. It looks almost 3d, but I was actually punching the curl against a red rose that was about 4 feet away. Increased the white balance as well.

I used my macro tubes for the next one because I wanted a bit more control over depth of field. Ornamental Cabbage is fun to shoot. So many colors!
Another with the 50 flipped. A bit more on the abstract side. I liked the color gradients. I also upped my white balance to look warmer.

Used the tubes for this last one. I wanted the flower to look sad and dreary, so I turned down the saturation, upped the contrast, and lowered my white balance.

Rain Drops on the Window

There was a pretty spectacular sunset the other day that I hoped to be able to catch with my camera. I got a few shots through the window, because it was still raining, and then refocused on the raindrops instead. In doing this, I managed to smoosh the colors of the sunset together to form a color gradient behind the drops ( let it be known this was my first successful smoosh). The black frame on top and bottom are the blinds that I was shooting through. I like how it turned out...a different take on a rainy sunset:)

It's inspiring really to see someone take to the ideas and theory of In Focus composition so quickly. Well done David!

Just a few images from our day in Old Town.

First, the basics — A window in static placement.

Next, the window still in a static placement ... but with an added anchor and some bilateral symmetry. Now the window in active placement, with an anchor that is split.

I like this one.
A cap and anchor makes it easy to read ... and with the two main elements sitting separately.
The eye wanders back & forth to look for a connection.

The sloping boardwalk makes this image seem edgy and uncomfortable.
There is conflict between the elements as they aren't all sloping together.

Adding this gentleman calms the image with predictability.

He's the most powerful element, drawing attention away from the sloping walkway.

Now this collage of pleasing elements has one very peculiar character lurking.

I think he's even a bit un-nerving.

Below, the eye is drawn to the red long-johns, of course.

Then it jumps to the boy, and we wonder why he is there.

Only then does the eye take the time to survey

The rest of the image, and sample the rhythm of the other elements.

The anchor and cap add some stability.

But what if we came across this image first?

The eye hits the red long-johns first,

but we don't know from where they hang.

Then the boy. He's grieving!

The eye darts back to the clothing,

but then notices the shadow behind it.

And suddenly the image is a bit suggestive and disturbing.

A plea to those who know better

The key to expressionism and in creating art with a camera lies with the mastery of the mechanics and of art of visualization. Important tools and ideas are being stripped from the camera and lens every day ... and no one is complaining. An entire generation has been brainwashed into believing that auto focus is a good thing and those old enough to know better .... aren’t saying a word. Please help. As a caring photographer, as a teacher this type of apathy upsets me more than anything. Part of being an artist with a camera is in communicating to others, sharing a piece of yourself with the world. It’s our responsibility to share what we know to be the truth. Don’t be stingy. The truth should not be kept secret. This is just basic physics, telling people about it isn’t going to damage your career. We have to share this information.
In just the last 25 years people have forgotten not only how to control depth-of-field but what is and why it’s important. Imagine what will happen in 25 more. Nikon has already taken off of their beginner SLR cameras the depth-of-field preview button (SHAME ON YOU NIKON). These are the cameras people start with. If they don’t have this option on their camera when they begin their journey, they’ll never learn why it’s important.
Sure, this is good news for camera manufactures as an ignorant customer base is much easier to manipulate than a knowledgeable one ... but its terrible news for those wanting to be artists with a camera.
Please, don’t let equipment manufactures and their marketing firms ruin for others what has treated you so well in the past. Share what you know about real photography. Mentor someone who is just starting out. Send them down the path that you know is difficult — sure they will struggle and fail at first but think of everything they’ll learn. Show them that experience is the best teacher and that light and vision need to be understood and controlled ... just as much as their equipment.
People want to learn, trust us, this we know. They are looking for those heros who will show them how to use their equipment and how it really works. Tell them the truth. Sure it’ll be a difficult journey for them and the challenges will be great to you as well — but please share what you know, (who you are) with someone.
Stop the hacks, stop the marketing hype and offer those in search of artistic freedom something honest. Share with them your heart and your passion for real photography and tell them what it is that you know to be right — that the secret to creating great messages with their camera doesn’t have anything to do with their camera at all ... it lies in their own heart and in what they want to say to begin with.

Abstract depictions are becoming my favorite message medium. (Rod and Robin probably remember when I only did abstract because it was good for me.)

This current favorite is wet pavement reflecting holiday lights at the zoo. The texture just grabs. A little imagination and you can see the crab moving down toward it colorful food.

The stark lines of an AZ desert sunset. Love the blues.

The juxtaposition of microwave against visible wave (colored light) was awesome.

We went to Bouse, AZ after Christmas to ride the quads. Our third night we had a wonderful sunset. Found some interesting Socorro cactus to photograph.

This was a great way to end the first day of the new year with a glorious sunset from the desert.

Indoor on camera flash

I used the on camera flash and was across the room. The lens was my 50-200mm. These are cropped the second a lot more than the first. It is not all that easy to take flash photos of a cat's eyes but these came out pretty good.

PUNCHING YOUR WAY TO ARTISTIC VISION

One of the biggest hurdles an In Focus photographer will come across on his journey to artistic freedom is his own 'subject-only' bias. It takes a lot to 'see' beyond our own vision, to create messages instead of simple pictures. We start our students off with a simple technique we call 'punching'. It helps them focus on seeing alternatives instead of just focusing on subjects.

"Think before you press the shutter," we offer. "Look at everything in the viewfinder, adjust your perspective, change your depth-of-field. Don't just react, plan. Why not be an artist who creates his own message, his own work of art instead of just another photographer taking a pretty picture? Use the world around you, look to all the pieces ... not just the one that strikes your fancy. Push yourself toward your real goal of becoming an artist with your camera and your images will show this dedication, this I promise."

An acknowledgement: There is nothing more satisfying than having the opportunity to share your passion with those you love. With this in mind, we extend our deepest gratitude to both Holly Kidd and Alexis Deutschmann for their willingness to put on a smile under any condition, their participation in the making of this book was invaluable. We also thank Jacob, Ryan, Tara and Jay for their support, as well as the many IFLC students whose quest for the truth have pushed us along the path to perfect our skills and techniques. This experience has enriched our lives immensely, thank you for sharing it with us.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our third book on flash photography (JUST ONE FLASH) ... as she was was packaged and sent to New York city. She joins our second book (MULTIPLE FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY) on the desk of our wonderful editor Michelle ... who has her work cut out for her. Not only will she be examining these two with a microscope, but she's also knee-deep in the pre-press and distribution phase of our first book (OFF CAMERA FLASH).

We also had the wonderful opportunity to meet (by phone) our publicist Kate. So full of energy and passion, we can't wait to see what this fireball can do with our 'kids.'

This road to publication has proved to be an exciting adventure. We have learned so much about the business and art of creating a book and want to thank everyone for their help and support throughout the journey.

We've grown as communicators and people, seeing the world a bit differently — as if blinders were taken off. Our respect and admiration for authors (no matter what they've written) has grown by leaps and bounds. We read a lot about the process before jumping in ... but nothing can prepare you for the emotions, energy and (sometimes) turmoil that writing a book brings. It's an arduous journey to say the least and requires a dedication and perseverance well beyond normal. As many of you know we've been in the newspaper business a long time, and while similar in some respects ... it's a whole new animal. We're very lucky though, patience and a smile through adversity is something you get good at with five kids. So we actually were more prepared than we knew. There were times when the pressure was great. Deadlines will do that to you. Shoot after shoot, day-after-day of writing, designing and editing. It does wear you down. But we took it and pushed and ... we wouldn't have done it any other way. We're both aware that it's the journey that's most important. The Road to Hana is our favorite drive (as long as it's not at night).

The best thing to come from this entire thing is that we have grown even closer as a family... sharing equally in the excitement and stress. There is nothing more satisfying than having the opportunity to share your passion with those you love. Plus it proved exceedingly exciting to share it with all of our In Focus family as well. Your support, kind words and inspiration proved invaluable in the creation of all three books as well. You pushed us as artists and as instructors — allowing us not just to hone our skill at creating art but also at sharing with others how its done.

We have so much to be thankful for this season and we want to thank all of you for everything you've done. Without all of our family, without you and the love for expression and truth that we all share — then the In Focus Learning Center wouldn't be here and this bright smile we have on our faces right now wouldn't exist.
